THEY SAID THE VENUE
COULDN'T HOST U12.
WE BROUGHT THE SENIOR EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP.

A personal challenge became a regional bid, an international allocation, a multi-venue transformation programme and a championship delivered through the uncertainty of the Covid period.

Years earlier, while exploring whether Avigliana could bid for a U12 European Championship, I was told the venue was not suitable even for that level. I remembered it.

Later, when the opportunity emerged to bring the senior European Championship to Piemonte, that old limitation became the starting point rather than the conclusion. The proposition was larger: use event management, political support and territorial funding to transform the venues and bring a continental senior championship to the region.

The idea was not to prove someone wrong. It was to prove what the territory could become with a complete project around it.

The bid began with the territory: mayors and regional political stakeholders were approached to test whether the project had genuine institutional support. Once that support was credible, the candidature, preliminary works and budget could be built around it.

The next step was internal: convince the FIBS Federal Council that the Piemonte proposal should represent Italy against another credible Italian candidature. Then came the European competition, with strong interest from other countries. The allocation was eventually unlocked through a solution that allowed two strong bids to coexist across successive championships: Italy in 2021 and the Czech Republic in 2023.

The “EBC21 Candidate Region” campaign was designed to make the candidature visible, credible and shared. Public support videos, political and sporting endorsements and a growing media narrative helped turn a technical bid into a regional project people could recognise.

After allocation, that campaign became delivery: supplier search, quotes, venue modifications, sponsor closure, hospitality, broadcast interfaces, the local organising structure and a Road to the Championship designed to keep attention alive.

Regional clubs were brought into the Local Organising Committee and then into volunteer delivery. At the same time, the entire preparation sat inside a cycle of uncertainty: event, no event, closed doors, limited attendance, new protocols, testing, quarantine.

Teams arrived early for quarantine and training. Operations were organised through differentiated bubbles for athletes, operators and spectators. The event had to keep moving while the conditions around it were still changing.

“Si fa, non si fa, si fa a porte chiuse, non si fa, si fa.” The project survived uncertainty by continuing to prepare for delivery.

Once competition began, the project changed character. The work became constant movement between Torino, Avigliana and Settimo Torinese: venue issues, broadcast, services, teams, spectators and the accumulation of small decisions that keep a multi-venue event coherent.

The final in Torino is the emotional memory: a close game, a strong crowd and players staying on the field to applaud the public. After months of uncertainty and years of project development, the event finally existed in the only form that mattered — live.
